It always amazes me that handmade pottery is still thriving in the 21st century – that we still seem to like the idea of eating, drinking, and decorating our homes with products that come from an actual pair of hands and not a machine in some far-off factory. But, thankfully, we do. I’d like to say that my motivation for making pottery comes from some profound connection between my work and the cycle of nature, or that it’s an inner spiritual link with some mysterious force, but, in truth, it has more to do with the feel of the materials in my hands, the excitement of the process, and the technology that’s gone into making contemporary pottery so versatile and spontaneous. The colors of the glazes, the heat of the fire, and the sharpness of the tools are the things that intrigue me most. I’m not sure exactly why that is, but I’m thankful they do.
